Our team has been accepted to present at the American Occupational Therapy Association's (AOTA) 90th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida in April 2010. AOTA received 1100 applicants and only accepted 300! We are presenting on using the Assessing The Learning Strategies of Adults (ATLAS) and how successful it has been in enhancing caregiver learning, team collaboration and therapist-client communication at ATC.

Otutulu

We spent time on wheelchair positioning, relieving discomfort and providing individualized therapy to the visually and physically impaired.

Otutulu: we were able to provide training on exercises to improve ocular-motor control (necessary to visually focus far or near during copying tasks) as well as introduce the Handwriting Without Tears Program.

Lakoja: We provided training to the aunties regarding massage techniques to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Individual cases were also brought to our attention: a child with a brachial plexus injury (could not move his arm at shoulder, cried alot becuase he was in so much pain) and children who had low or high tone.

While the aunties are doing chores, the children play in an area upstairs. We were able to put posters up on the walls to provide visual stimulation.

Ministry of Mercy Orphanage's branch in Lakoja. Children birth to two years old are looked after here. Once they turn two, they are transferred to Otutulu (approximately two hours drive). The orphanage is currently renting an old hotel. Aunties care so beautifully for the children despite the many time-consuming chores: no running water (water is carried in buckets from a well), no washers (laundry is done by hand and takes a few days to dry because of the humidity) and cooking over open fire in one of the rooms.

Hello everyone,
It has been harder to access the internet than we thought! We travelled around Lakoja to six different internet cafe's yesterday - every one was closed.
We spent two nights in Lakoja branch of the orphanage, as planned. We put up posters and played with the children. The aunties seemed pleased to learn massage techniques to relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. This has been a humbling experience to see the conditions which the children and aunties live in (the landlord refuses to connect water to the delapidated hotel he rents to the orphanage - so buckets of water have to be carried in, up a steep flight of concrete, uneven stairs to the various rooms - most nights it is done in the dark). Despite their conditions, they are so content, hospitable, happy to see us and gracious, so very gracious.
We attended a church service in Anyigba this morning - two hours long. It was amazing to be singing along with so many people surrounded by a few walls and a makeshift shelter over our heads. The church was burned down by a fire started by rebels. Despite the surroundings, we all worshipped with the most amazing music.
Travelling between villages has been nerve wrecking most of the time. Constant beeping, motorcycles racing past the vehicles on any side, cars dodging potholes (and there are many). We are really grateful for your continued prayers for safety.
Everyone on the team are doing well. We haven't suffered illness of any sort and for that we are grateful.

Jog-A-Thon

Life Baptist Church arranged a Jog-A-Thon fundraiser today (Saturday). So many children from the Sunday School attended and were sponsored. We had so much fun walking, jogging, doing practically anything to get the laps in (talking all the way, of course).

Thank you, thank you everyone for making this trip to Nigeria possible.

Our team bravely faced the needles. Some of us needed six shots - ouch!

We are so thankful that the only complaints during the weekend were really sore arms and fatigue.

All better now and ready to start the week. Only two weeks left before we leave on our adventure.

Dr. Tania Stegen-Hanson, OTD, OTR/L, C/NDT is an experienced pediatric occupational therapist who graduated in South Africa in 1992. Tania moved to the USA to gain experience working in the world’s leading medical and occupational therapy field. She gained specialized training through the University of Southern California in Sensory Integration treatment and intervention, worked at the Ayres clinic, and was mentored by leaders in the field of Sensory Integration. Tania obtained further specialized training in Neuro-developmental therapy for children.

These specialized intervention approaches enabled Tania to develop skills in feeding therapy and she was mentored by Suzanne Evans Morris, a leader in feeding and oral-motor intervention. Tania has been trained in the Beckman Oral Motor Protocol and has attended Debra Beckman’s training as a lab assistant.

Additional certifications include: extensive training to administer the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT) as well as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS).

Tania co-authored Just Take A Bite, detailing a step-by-step plan to address eating challenges and food aversions. This book has sold over 20 000 copies and has helped families and educators understand the physiological, developmental, sensory and motor aspects that may compromise a child’s ability to accept foods. The philosophy embraced: respecting the child’s communication and responses to eating and mealtimes.

In addition to running her practice, Tania presents at local and national conferences, and guest lectures at Touro University’s Masters occupational therapy program.

Tania completed her doctorate in occupational therapy (OTD) from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.
